BluGem's test call generators were designed to actively verify the performance of communications networks and the information systems around them by instigating calls, messages and data sessions. However, we soon realised they passively receive intelligence about the abuse of networks, just like ordinary phone users who receive unsolicited spam and scam robocalls and messages. That passive data-gathering capability is now being offered as a service to telcos who want an objective source of intelligence about the criminal, fraudulent and nuisance communications that plague their customers.
The BluGem honeypot service automatically records all instances of unsolicited communications received at the phone numbers provided by a telco. We can save messages, keep recordings of voice calls, and maintain a precise tally of how many messages and calls belong to the various categories of scam and spam activity we have previously identified. This information is of use in identifying gaps in existing spam and scam controls, or providing evidence to government agencies and law enforcement. Some countries, like India, have made it mandatory for telcos to implement honeypots to monitor trends in unsolicited communications and our service is also designed to satisfy regulatory obligations of this type.
